The one-line version
SEO is the work of ranking in a list of results. GEO is the work of being understood and included in a generated answer.
SEO competes for a position. GEO competes to be a source. That single distinction explains almost every practical difference between them.
Where they genuinely differ
Reader journey
Traditional search may lead a person to a page; generated answers may summarize information and link to supporting pages. Both formats can appear in the same search experience.
Content
A direct answer with necessary qualifications helps people understand a topic. Do not remove important limits just to create a short quotable passage. No format guarantees that a system will select it.
Measurement
Search Console reports Google impressions and clicks, including AI features within Web search. Other assistants provide different levels of referral or visibility information. Prompt sampling can document an observation but cannot establish all users saw the same answer.
Consistency
Conflicting prices, hours or location information can confuse readers and automated systems. Correct the sources you control; do not assert an undocumented ranking penalty or a fixed response to conflicts.
Where they are the same
The overlap is larger than the difference, which is why treating them as separate purchases rarely makes sense.
- Crawlability. If a system cannot read your page, neither discipline works.
- Speed and mobile rendering. Same requirement, same reasons.
- Clear structure. Honest headings and logical hierarchy help ranking and extraction equally.
- Genuine expertise. Use verifiable knowledge and helpful explanations rather than copying or padding content.
- Accurate structured data. Helps machines parse the page, whichever kind of machine it is.
- Consistent business information. Helps avoid conflicting descriptions in both contexts.
- Reputation and corroboration. Being referenced by credible sources supports both.
Clear, supported content serves readers across both contexts; neither ranking nor inclusion is guaranteed.
What actually changes in the work
If you already do SEO properly, adopting GEO thinking changes four things.
- You lead with the answer. The first paragraph under a heading states the conclusion. Everything else supports it. This feels counterintuitive to anyone trained to build up to a point.
- You publish specifics you have been avoiding. Price ranges, service areas, lead times, capacity limits, what you do not do. Publish only approved details that help a customer judge fit, with qualifications where needed.
- You take consistency seriously. Auditing every place your business is listed and correcting them stops being an optional tidy-up.
- You check how you are described. A periodic manual review — asking realistic questions in several assistants and recording the answers — replaces the ranking check that does not exist.
Should you shift budget from SEO to GEO?
Allocate effort by the problem, not the acronym. Fix blocked or misleading service pages before expanding article volume. Improve existing answers before creating another page for the same intent. Keep approved business facts consistent.
Use enquiry quality, search data and observable information errors to decide the next task. Do not abandon an effective channel because of an unsupported claim that all discovery has moved to AI. Costs and channel contribution depend on the business.
A practical checklist
Apply this to your most important commercial pages. It serves both disciplines.
- Does the first paragraph answer the question in the heading?
- Would the answer still be correct if someone quoted just that paragraph?
- Are there specifics — numbers, areas, ranges, timeframes — or only adjectives?
- Does the page state what you do not do, or who it is not for?
- Do your business name, phone number and service description match exactly across your site, Google profile and listings?
- Is there structured data, and does it describe only what is visible on the page?
- Is the content readable without JavaScript running?
- When did you last check that the prices and details on the page are current?
The last question catches more businesses than any of the others.
